1. What did you learn this week?
One thing I learned this week is about the life cycles of plants and animals. We used modeling to demonstrate our knowledge on this topic. My partner and I did the life cycle of a carrot plant. I really enjoyed this activity, because it allowed us to be creative. Each group modeled a different life cycle, so we got to learn about a large variety. 

  1. How can you apply what you've learned to your teaching in the future?
I think all of the hands-on activities that we did in lab would be great to use in my future teaching. These consisted of modeling a life cycle with play dough, planting seeds, and looking at the seeds we had planted the previous week. I enjoyed getting to learn about a topic and then applying it in real life. I think this would be very beneficial for my future students. 

  1. What are new or remaining questions?
One remaining question I have is why we planted some seeds with cotton balls and water, and others with dirt and fertilizer. I'm wondering if we will compare the growth of both environments to determine which conditions are most ideal for plan growth.

    Hi Ellie,
    I was thinking the same question about planting in a cotton ball instead of dirt. I think, however, it is interesting to see that a plant can grow without the proper soil we normally need. I also agree that hands-on activities like we did in class are a great thing for us to take into a future classroom!

    Hi Ellie,
    I really like your carrots, they're very cute. I agree that hands-on activities we've done in class will be beneficial for teaching in our future classrooms. I'm glad we have gotten to actually do the activities so we can see what it's like for the students, rather than just discussing what we could do in our classrooms.

Week 1: Sun, Earth, and the Moon

What did you do in lab today? ​ In lab, we were given an earth, moon, and green laser that represented a geometrical plane. We explored what causes the phases of the moon, what causes seasons, and what causes a lunar eclipse. We used the materials given to help us visualize and answer these questions.  I learned that seasons are  based on direct sunlight; not necessarily how close the earth is to the sun but the amount of direct sunlight the earth gets. Week 10: Layers of Earth, Convection Cells, and Plate Tectonics

        What did you do in lab? In lab we did a lab that shows the different types of tectonic plate movements. A convergent boundary is when one plate dives under another. A convergent boundary forms a mountain. A real-life example of this is the Himalaya Mountains in India. We watched a video about the theory of continental drift and plate tectonics. Plate tectonics is the cause. Continental drift is the effect of the movement. Scientists are starting to find new species in the trench in the ocean every day. We did an activity that showed the transform boundary, divergent boundary, and convergent boundary. We used graham crackers, rice cakes, and whipped cream to show the different types of boundaries. Week 8: Geology that kids see

1.       What did you do in lab today? In lab we explored fossils that are found in Iowa. We sorted the fossils and looked at them under a microscope. We found lots of brachiopods and corals. Both were animals that would stick to the sea floor. Next, we looked at 11 different types of sand under a microscope. We wrote down observations and characteristics of each type. It was surprising to see how many differences there were because before looking at them under a microscope they all looked very similar. We finished lab by visiting the museum of Natural History in MacBride Hall and looking at the animals that were previously found in Iowa.
